The Design:
- Introduced in 1946 the Nelson platform bench was part of George Nelson's first collection for Herman Miller and still stands as a benchmark of modern design. Like much of Nelson's work, the platform bench has clean, rectilinear lines, reflecting his architectural background and his insistence on what he calls "honest" design--that is, making an honest visual statement about an object's purpose.
- As presented in the 1948 Herman Miller furniture catalog, the platform bench "is primarily a high base for deep and shallow cases, but it also serves as a low table for extra seating." The 1955 catalog states that the bench "has proved to be one of the most flexible and useful units in the collection." The bench was reintroduced in 1994.

George Nelson laid out five tenets of Herman Miller's design philosophy 50 years ago:

- The product must be honest.
- You decide what you will make.
- There is a market for good design.
While fashion and style have their place, the main criterion for a Herman Miller product has remained constant: Does it truly solve a problem that people care about in a way that improves upon other solutions, or pioneers a new and better answer altogether? The answer is Yes.

I use this as a bench in the entrance way of my home. It looks great and the quality is good, but unless you sit exactly in the middle of it, it will tip over. For children, this is dangerous and I dont recommend it if you have small children in the house. But then again, my mother even tipped it, so all in all, its kind of dangerous to sit on.
